Our Services
Our Services
Our Design, Workshop & Build Services
We have a broad set of capabilities which can be tailored to the scope of each project:
Complete management of timber building projects
We can offer whole-project management, working as Principal Contractor alongside many local architects to deliver all on-site aspects of large bespoke timber building projects within the South Hams. We have our own plant and site equipment and work with a full network of trades and industry professionals meaning a single point of contact for our clients from ground works to handover.
Workshop fabrication & installation across the UK
From our workshops in Kingsbridge we operate as specialist carpentry contractors, manufacturing and installing a wide range of buildings, frames & structures across the South West and UK.
Oak framing
Our frames are made by hand in our Devon workshop. We have extensive experience in all aspects of pegged and contemporary structural framing. Our framing team have 50 years between them working for one of the UK’s leading Oak frame companies, and bring all the knowledge, expertise and capability of delivering projects across the UK - ranging from simple playful structures to some of the most challenging architecturally driven schemes. We manufacture staircases and exterior structures such as balconies and verandas together with bespoke joinery and unique furniture to complete schemes.
Contemporary frames in Douglas Fir & Glulam
We manufacture contemporary structures, using Douglas Fir and glulam beams and are experienced in modern construction methods and timber engineering techniques. Whether a scheme is curved in plan or elevation, has a parabolic roof, requires bespoke steelwork or other engineering solutions we have all the necessary experience.
Bespoke timber buildings manufactured off-site
We design & build complete kits for our timber buildings where possible including the insulated structural panels (SIPS). This style of ‘off-site manufacture’ has a range of benefits including quality control, shortened timescales and minimal disruption on site.
We can offer a ‘wind and watertight’ package if required, which means we complete the main structure on site and get the building to the point that it is weathertight, secure and able to be finished in a convenient timeframe. This is a very cost-effective solution, ideal for clients who are hands-on or who are happy to manage the foundations and subsequent local trades themselves.
Design
Technical design
Timber construction is a specialist area which requires expertise and experience. Most projects require some degree of workshop manufacture (eg a structural frame, wall panels or a complete cabin kit) and careful technical design and detailing which take place well in advance of any on-site work. For this reason, the design of the timber elements is a pivotal part of the overall scheme and often drives the whole design process. Where an architect is involved, we work closely with them - ideally from an early stage - offering any advice and guidance necessary and then helping pull the detailed design together once any planning has been achieved.
Concept design & presentation
For smaller spaces or specialist structures we can work up initial ideas into a concept scheme and assist with budget costings. We work in 3D to enable our clients to visualise the design and produce drawings suitable for planning applications. We can progress to full photo-realistic renders and portfolio style presentation where required.
Planning applications
We can provide guidance to the Planning and Building Regulations framework. We often work in collaboration with a planning consultant to set projects off in the right direction. For small standalone buildings and for our own designs, we can provide drawings and manage the Application process.
HUTI concept
We offer a range of in-house pre-designed and configurable timber buildings and structures which provide thoughtfully designed and cost-effective solutions for annexes, home offices, garden rooms and rental units. Please call us for more info.
Advice before you build
Getting a project off the ground can seem daunting at first as there can be many unknowns. We offer early-stage guidance to clients to achieve that initial clarity and get a project on track. We also work closely with several Architects and Planning Consultants locally whose expertise is invaluable on larger or trickier schemes.
A feasibility visit gives us a chance to share ideas, gather inspiration from our large collection of images & concept designs and typically includes solid advice on:
· Planning constraints and Building Regulations
· Build-practicalities including groundworks, drainage and foundations
· Ballpark costings
· ‘Return on Investment’ (ROI) advice for rental units
